THIS is the story of a hardworking man who was also a caring provider for his family and relatives.

Andrew Andaya was born in Dasay, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur on July 10, 1912. In 1926, at only 14, he came to Hawaii together with his uncle. They left Port Salomague, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur with hopes and dreams for a better life.

Even at that young age, Andrew was already mature and ready to work at Hawaiian Commercial and Sugar Company [HC &S]. He was a very strong man. His first job was cutting sugar canes with sharp cane knives. He bundled them up and carried on his back. There were no machinary to do those jobs during those days. He was paid 75 cents a day. Then he became a dump truck driver, collecting the rubbish from the mill and the fields and dumped them in proper places. He held on this job until he retired, at 62, in 1974.

Andrew lived in Alabama Camp in Puunene, Maui. Alabama Camp was a very special place where many fun activities were held at the Filipino Clubhouse. There were social dances galore where young men went for fun. Rizal Day celebrations were also held there.

In November 1961, at age 49, Andrew decided to go back to the Philippines to find a wife. In Dasay, Narvacan, Ilocos Sur, he met a very beautiful yong lady, Perlita Valdez. There was no doubt in his mind that she should be the perfect wife for him. Andrew's brother was assigned to go to Perlita's parents to tell them of Andrew's intention to marry their daughter. Perlita's parents accpeted the proposal- the danon- without reservations. On December 14, 1961, Andrew and Perlita exchanged vows at Lucy's Chuurch in Narvacan town. A grand reception followed in Dasay, at Perlita's home.

Andrew came back to Hawaii soon after their wedding. Perlita followed him on March 19, 1962. They lived in Alabama Camp in Puunene for a few years then moved to Kahului in 1964 beacuse the Puunene Camps were about to phased out.

Perlita worked at the Maui Pine Cannery as a packer until 1968. In 1972, she worked at HC & S until her retirement in 1995. At HC & S, she took care of young cane plants, drove a tractor, served as control crew worker [controlled the conveyor for cane stalks for planting], and installed pipes for drip irrigation.

Andrew and Perlita have two caring children, Pauline and Andrew Jr. Pauline is married to Robert Tiu and works at Maui Federal Credit Union as Operations Manager. They have three children: Nathan, Brittany, and Jacob. Brittany is presently a student at Seattle University hoping to be a pharmacist. They also have a grand daughter, Kaila Faith.

Andrew Jr. is married to Baby  and works at HC & S. They have three childredn: Julia Sunshine, Chelsea, and Anson James.

Pauline Tiu had these heartwarming words to say about her Dad: "May Dad was a very hardworking and caring man. He always wanted the best for his children, better than that he ever had. He emphasized to us the importance f education and to make something out of ourselves. He was my baby sitter when I had my first baby, Nathan. He was a good husband to my Mom. He was a great cook. He can cook anything even the best pinapaitan- the fresh beef soup dish. I missed his cooking a lot. When my Mom came home from work, he was already done with the cooking for our dinner. I love my Dad. I was his pet. I miss him."

Andrew Sr., passed away on January 6, 1990.

Perlita became a naturalized US citizen on December 22, 1965. She and Andrew were instrumental in petitioning her parents, Federico and Francesca Valdez, her brothers Ernesto, David, Reynaldo, Alex, and Roger, her sister Mila Fontanilla, her sister-in-law, Narcisa Andaya, and her nephews, Henry, Oscar, Melchor, and Larry Andaya. Perlita even took a second job to help finance their expenses in coming to Hawaii.

Perlita's advice to her contemporaries is to travel whenever possible, exercise, and just enjoy life.

Her advice to the youth is to study hard and no to forget to attend church services.

Perlita keeps herself busy by babysitting  her great grandchildren and raising beautiful flowering plants such as euphorbias and orchids. She belongs to the Christ the King Church Choir and Maui Basic Christian Community.

In 1996, Perlita remarried a very nice, kind, and loving man, Ireneo Casino. They both enjoy going on cruises, trips, and taking care of their great grand children and their beautiful plants. *

A story of a plantation worker, Urbano Bio and Amanda Bio-Patoc, his daughter.
Urbano came to Hawaii to work on the plantations. His daughter recalles of her life with her father, and gratitude to him for paving the way for them to have a better life than they have known in the Ilocos.

The late Urbano was born on July 2, 1917 in Bangued, Abra. He was married to the late Marcela Vasquez.

Life was not easy for the Bio family. So Urbano joined the thousands of dirt-poor farmers from the Ilocos who came to Hawaii in 1946 to work in the sugar and pineapple plantations to find a better life for himself and his family even if it meant leaving his young children Vivencio and Erlinda and his pregnant wife. Their daughter was born soon later.

He left the Philippines on board the S.S. Maunawili via Port Salomague, Cabugao, Ilocos Sur.

Upon arriving on Maui, he worked for Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar [HC &S] Company as  planter. After seven years, he went back to the Philippines to visit his family. During that visit, Rodrigo would be born as soon as Urbano got back to Hawaii. Urbano retired from HC &S as an irrigator in 1979. Unfortunately, Urbano and Marcela passed away in March 2oo5.

Amanda shared her heart-warming comments about her father: "Papa was perfect Dad. He was very soft spoken. He never argued with anyone. He was patient, understanding and always smiling. He was a very caring husband. He was a very caring father and grandfather. He cooked for his friends when he was still living in the camp. He enjoyed listening to the Ilocano programs on radio. He enjoyed playing solitaire. He also enjoyed going to the Maui Theater, the located where Burger King is now, to watch the movies from the Philippines. He had a happy disposition. He was our idol."

At 14, Marcelo and her mom and siblings came to Hawaii.

The trip took them 17 days with stop-over in Oahu, they soon moved to Maui to join her father. Spanish B, the camp where would stay, was a welcome place. The other workers were fond of the sibling, particularly Amanda; the spoke ilokano, and would sing ilokano, too.

And when sang in ilokano, they would get a monetary reward.

Amanda attended the old Likihai School, now the location of Maui Beach Hotel today. Then she moved to Baldwin High for her high school. From there, she moved to Maui Community College for her degree in Business Administration.

In 197o, she decide to take a vacation in California but ended up staying and working at a bank there.

In 1972, she married the love of her life, Carmelo Patoc before moving back to Maui.

She landed on a job with American Security Bank. From there, she moved to GYA, an architectural firm, before transfering to the first Hawaiian Bank in 2oo1 where she has remained.

Amanda and Carmelo are talented ballroom dancers. THey were instructors of the Hawaiian Ballroom Dancing Association and participated in various ballroom showcases.

Besides ballroom dancing, tehy are involved with Christ the King Church, the Marian Choir, the Filipino Cultural Club, Laoag City Association of Maui, Maui Filipino Community Association, the Christ the King Filipino Catholic Club.

Amanda and Carmelo were blessed with a son, Wesley, who is a sous chef at Cafe Laufer in Honolulu.

Amanda advice to the youth: "Respect your parents, get involved in church, set a goal for yourself, think of your future and study hard."

To the adults she advice: "Be happy and be satisfied with what you have. Live to the fullest everyday. Ages doesn't matter as long as you think young. Get involved in church and in the community."

FELICISIMO MANUEL COLOMA: A Worker from Pinili

IN 1946, many sakadas left Pinili, Ilocos Norte to find a better life in Hawaii.

One of them was Felicisimo Manuel Coloma. Born on August 1, 1923 in Barangay Pusol, he left the Philippines via Port Salomague in Cabugao, Ilocos Sur in April 1946 aboard the S.S. Maunawili.

Upon arriving on Maui, Felicisimo worked for the Pioneer Mill in Lahaina. He did odd jobs such as cutting seed for three months at a time. He earned a measly dollar for each day of backbreaking labor in the fields.

A relative , Lloyd Labasan, invited Felicisimo to work at the Paia Sugar Company. He worked there as field maintenace man. He then moved to the mobile irrigation department and worked there until he retired in 1985.

While at Paia Mill, he lived at Orpheum Camp where many sakadas like him lived. Paia Merchantile, a supermarket and a variety store where they shopped the most. The sakadas were able to shop there by credit, their credit deducted from their paychecks. Sometimes at the end of the month, they only had a few dollars left on their paychecks.

Usually, many single sakada went back to the Philippines to find a wife and bring them back to Hawaii. In Felicisimo's case, it was a little different.

On June 12, 1961, there was a beautiful young lady by the name of Lydia Tacob Agaran who came to Hawaii on a visitor visa. She lived on Oahu upon arrival. Lydia knew Felicisimo's family in the Philippines especially her sister. His sister wrote to him prior to Lydia's trip to Hawaii telling him about Lydia. That same sister gave a letter for Felicisimo to be delivered by Lydia not knowing that Maui and Oahu are two islands. Instead delivering the letter, Lydia mailed it to Felicisimo. Upon receiving the letter, Felicisimo decided to visit Lydia on Oahu. That was the first meeting of both. Lydia then moved to Hilo. Felicisimo followed her there and decided to propose. Lydia did not accept that proposal. Lydia moved back to Oahu and Felicisimo found out. Felicisimo proposed again to Lydia with the presence of Lydia's uncle and auntie, Mr. and Mrs. Quirino Bugarin. Lydia finally accepted that proposal.

On January 27, 1962, a grand wedding was held in Maui. The ceremony was held at the Good Shepherd Church and the reception was held at the Paia Clubhouse. In those days, the men, great cooks they were, did the cooking. Several pigs and cows were slaughtered for the occasion. Lydia and Felicisimo's wedding was attended by many friends and relatives.

After the wedding, Lydia and Felicisimo lived in Orpheum Camp in Paia for three years. Then they bought a house in Lower Paia and lived there until 1972 prior to moving to Kahului.

Lydia and Felicisimo enjoyed going to the Paia Theatre that was next to the Ikeda Store to watch their favorite movies. They enjoyed shopping at the Ikeda Store, the Bersamin's Fish Market and Nagata Store in downtown Paia. Today, these stores are no longer in existence.

They aslo enjoyed going to Baldwin Beach and the Sprecklesville Beach to pick limu or seaweed. The pukpuklo and ar-arusip were in abundance at those beaches. Lydia claims that she enjoyed picking the pipipi [seashells on rocks]. Going to biangan [chicken fight], play card games, and gardening were Felicisimo's favorite past time. Felicisimo passed away on April 29, 1998.

Lydia and Felicisimo were blessed with two children. Their first child is Representative Gilbert Coloma Agaran. He was appointed by Governor Lind Lingle to take the place of the late Rep. Bob Nakasone. He is married to Kallie Agaran.

Their second child is Velma Coloma. She works at the Hawaiian Helicopter Company.

Felicisimo and Lydia Coloma were active in these organizations: USDIR [United Sons and Daughters of Ilocano Region], Pinili-Badoc Maui Association, KFCA [Kahului Filipino Community Association], and Saranay Maui. Lydia is presently active in the Kahului Filipino Senior Club, ILWU Local 142, and the Good Shepherd Women's Dance Group. Lydia and her dance group danced at the Barrio Fiesta last May.

Lydia advice to the youth: "Go to school and get a good education so that it easier to find a better job. Join the extra curricular activities in school. It helps later on when applying for scholarships and applying for jobs. Keep up the good work at all times."

Lydia's advice to older folks is: "Be active and join in organizations. Socialization is one way to keep the mind healthy. Be friendly to everyone you meet. Eat healthy foods like fish and vegetables like marunggay, paria and utong."
